Introduction

On August 1, 2005, National Hsinchu Teachers College received approval for restructure and became the National Hsinchu University of Education. Upon this change, the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts was established. One of the three major colleges, the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts focused on culture, with local sentiments to pass down language, innovate art, care for society, and think globally. Over the years, it fostered countless talents in art, music, language, and social science education, evenly improving the overall humanistic and social literacy and artistic atmosphere in the Hsinchu area.

On November 1, 2016, the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) merged with the original National Hsinchu University of Education. At the same time, the College of Arts and the College of Education were established and began officially recruiting students in the 2017-2018 academic year. This was NTHU’s largest organizational development in recent years and turned it into the only top university with an arts college in Taiwan.

The purpose of the College of Arts is to nurture talent in art, design, and music. The merge of the universities also saw the founding of the Department of Arts and Design (Bachelor Program, Master Program, and In-service Master Program of Arts Education for Teachers) and the Department of Music (Bachelor Program and Master Program). Despite being the smallest college in NTHU, the College of Arts is full of vitality.

NTHU is a research university that places equal emphasis on the international development of leading-edge technology and specialized research and academics. This along with the wealth of resources that the College of Arts has to offer gives it optimum conditions to foster interdisciplinary talent in “techno art”, a new form in international art trends. In response to the trends of the times and the abundant resources of NTHU, the College of Arts established the Interdisciplinary Program of Technology and Art in the 2017-2018 academic year and began recruiting undergraduate students in techno art. In the 2021-2022 academic year, the Stream of Music, and the Stream of Interdisciplinary Art and Design were added. Furthermore, the Graduate Institute of Art and Technology was established in the 2022-2023 academic year. A Ph.D. program in prospective art studies is also in the works to promote all-round progress in the interdisciplinary spirit of art.

Departments

Department of Arts and Design (website)

Our department is equipped with multiple expertise, although the teaching process may be strict at times, the learning environment is open and free. Students have received international and domestic awards and are valued by the art community. Our students are often the recipient of many competitions, this includes the National Art Awards, the Taipei Art Awards, the Kaohsiung Award, the Hsinchu Art Award, and the Nanying Award. Besides, International and domestic exchange exhibitions are actively held. Visiting art events abroad has also expanded our students’ perspective and established new visions. In recent years, the number of graduate students has increased greatly, the number of applications and onsite registrations reached the highest rate compared to other universities in Taiwan. We are also very eager to contribute new possibilities towards the development and requirements of the four education fields in the modern era.

Department of Music (website)

Our department was established by professor YANG Zhao-Zhen, a domestically well-known tenor and educator. For many years, the Department of Music has been dedicated to pursuing professional excellence in the field of music, aside from our rich, diverse, and innovative curriculum design, we also emphasize the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration to cultivate aesthetics appreciation, which can expand the stage of the student’s musical art performances. From a global perspective, our department actively engages in international academic exchange, such as inviting world-renowned musicians to our department to perform and instruct, providing international exchange opportunities, etc. All this effort is to promote our students’ professional skills to a global and modern artistic standard.

Interdisciplinary Program of Technology and Art(IPTA) (website)

The Interdisciplinary Program of Technology and Art began to enroll new students in 2018. Revolving around techno art, its curriculum mapping covers introductory courses on techno art, advanced courses, thematic creation, and graduation projects. Students can choose a specialized field and receive a B.A.S. degree (Bachelor of Science and Art) upon graduation, or attend second professional specialty training and pursue the second degree. Characterized by its transdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary nature, the program’s curriculum is intended to incubate the vanguard of techno art in Taiwan and make the university a pioneer in transdisciplinary art and increase its visibility in the international art scene.

The program also supports the university’s International Intercollegiate Master/ Doctoral Program (Techno Art Division). In addition to domestic students, it has attracted many foreign students, overseas Chinese students, and students from China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Setting great store by students’ knowledge of theory and their skills and abilities in developing their own works independently, its curriculum enables students to take part in international exhibitions, reconciles theory and practice, and prioritizes students’ creative autonomy.

Graduate Institute of Art and Technology (website)

In a world where visual, sound, text, image, multimedia, network platforms, and other media converge and develop in the world led by digital technology. Under the trend of the industry, the Graduate Institute of Art and Technology of National Tsing Hua University will encourage students to study cross-fields of art and technology, and the spirit of bold cross-disciplinary clashes, not only breakthroughs and innovations in theory but also encourages “learning by doing”. Specifically, the establishment of this institute in addition to the talents who want to cultivate, have the critical thinking, creative ability, scientific and technological innovation of the humanities and the arts, creativity, and solid practical skills it also possesses humanities and art cultivation and a broad vision and can integrate what has been learned and applied to the generations of cross-fields that integrate contemporary disciplines, most important contribution to society.

SDGs

It is our primary concern as a university to achieve the sustainability of human society. Our mission is to cultivate talents for future generations. The purposes of education are to develop cultural heritage and create a meaningful life. Thus, the universities need to be active problem-solvers for the world and sustain generations despite different disciplines and departments in the university. To respond to the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), we have identified knowledge across different disciplines and started integrating humanity and technology via interdisciplinary research and teaching activities. We aim to bring students’ learning and self-fulfillment to engage the pursuit of SDGs, which fulfills our motto, “self-discipline and social commitment ”. We have marched for cross-disciplinary collaboration on our campus, and now let’s move forward together to the SDGs.
