工作坊 II:生成式人工智慧時代下的模擬修辭
模擬(Simulation)是許多媒體技術的核心,從電腦圖學、影像遊戲、虛擬實境(VR),到近期的生成式人工智慧(GenAI)皆然。電腦圖學演算法模擬了攝影機如何透過鏡頭記錄物理現實;影像遊戲對現實世界的物理或社交系統進行建模,並模擬其行為;虛擬實境甚至將使用者的身體置於與電腦模擬的人工環境之回饋迴圈中。而人工神經網路——生成式人工智慧的本質——則是對大腦中生物神經網路的電腦模擬。本工作坊將首先透過案例研究,回顧這些新興技術所促成的場景。我們將探討這些電腦模擬如何讓大眾參與日常情境、激發想像力,並影響其意圖甚至是行為,其特徵在於我所稱之為「後現實回饋迴圈」中的「持久沉浸」。鑑於這種具說服力的社會技術現象,我們將討論設計與開發相關技術時的倫理考量。

Workshop II: Rhetoric of Simulation in the Age of Generative AI
Simulation lies at the core of many media technologies, from computer graphics, video games, virtual reality (VR), to lately generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Computer graphics algorithms simulate how a camera records physical reality through its lens. Video games model real-world physical or social systems and simulate their behaviors. VR even puts the user’s body in a feedback loop with a computer-simulated artificial environment. Artificial neural networks, the essence of GenAI, are computer simulations of biological neural networks in the brain. This seminar workshop will first retrospectively review scenarios enabled by these emergent technologies through case study. We will examine how these computer simulations engage people in daily settings, prompt their imagination, and influence their intention and even behavior, featuring what I call “enduring immersion” in the “post-reality feedback loop.” In view of this persuasive socio-technological phenomenon, we will discuss the ethical considerations of designing and developing related technologies.
